What Is a FUT Hair Transplant?

FUT hair transplant, also known as Follicular Unit Transplantation or strip harvesting, is a minimally invasive surgery that involves transplanting healthy hair follicles from a donor site into balding areas. During the surgery, a thin strip of skin is removed from the back of the head, containing thousands of healthy hair follicles. These follicles are later isolated from the strip and implanted one by one onto the target areas.

FUT Procedure Step by Step

1. Initial Consultation
The first step toward your full head of hair is the initial consultation with Dr. Craft. At this appointment, the doctor will take a look at the extent of your hair loss and discuss in detail the cosmetic results you wish to achieve after the treatment. Based on his observations and your wishes, Dr. Craft will establish the donor site and design a precise surgical plan that will allow you to achieve your desired outcome.
2. Collection of Hair Follicles from the Donor Site
Before the surgery begins, a local anesthetic will be applied to your scalp. Dr. Craft will then carefully remove a strip of scalp from the donor site, – this strip is usually 1cm wide and up to 30cm long. After the removal, the strip will be placed in a special solution to keep the tissue and hair follicles alive before they can be extracted.
3. Implantation of Hair Follicles onto Target Areas
Next, Dr. Craft and his team will spend several hours carefully isolating each hair follicle from the stip under high power magnification. Once isolated, the hair follicles will be implanted individually into previously determined target areas on the scalp.
4. Follicular Unit Transplant Recovery

After the surgery, a soft dressing will be applied to the back of your head to protect the donor site while it is healing. After approximately 7 to 10 days, the area will be healed sufficiently to allow you to return to work and your other regular activities. This period is also required for the grafts to fully “set” into the target scalp areas. After approximately two weeks and for another 1 to 2 months, you will notice increased shedding of the newly transplanted hair. Do not worry, – this is completely normal and does not indicate the treatment failure. As soon as in 2 to 5 months, you will be able to enjoy your new, permanent hair.

5. FUT Hair Transplant Results
When it comes to significant hair loss or baldness, FUE and FUT hair transplants in Miami are the most effective treatments that offer permanent hair restoration. The donor site is chosen carefully to contain healthy hair follicles that will survive most of your lifetime. Once transplanted, these hair follicles will receive nutrients from blood vessels and begin to grow new, healthy hair.

FUE vs FUT Hair Transplant: What’s the Difference?

Both FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) are effective hair restoration surgeries that involve relocating healthy hair follicles from a donor site onto balding areas of the scalp. However, the two techniques involve different methods of harvesting healthy hair follicles:
  • With a FUT transplant, a thin strip of scalp with healthy hair is removed from the back of a patient’s head. The individual hair follicles are then isolated from the strip and are transplanted one by one onto the target areas.
  • With a FUE transplant, individual hair follicles are isolated directly from the scalp. They are then transplanted one by one onto the balding areas, similarly to a FUT transplant.
Both treatments are proven to permanently restore missing hair, with minimal downtime and nearly unnoticeable scarring. The optimal treatment technique often depends on the specific patient in question, their desired outcome, and multiple additional factors. At the Miami Hair Clinic, we offer both FUE and FUT hair transplants, along with several more conservative hair loss treatments.  During your initial consultation, Dr. Craft will evaluate your situation and suggest a treatment plan customized to your hair loss condition and final objectives.
